Is It OK to Hire a Painter without Licensing or Insurance?

When you begin looking for a painting contractor here in central Connecticut, you very quickly find that there are dozens of house painters to choose from. How can you select between them? Many homeowners look for the cheapest painter, enticed by the lowest painting estimate. You need to be aware, however, that in order to offer a price tag that low, some budget painters don’t bother with licensing and insurance.

Why Does It Cost More to Hire a Licensed, Insured Painter?

For a painting company to carry insurance, they need to pay premiums just like you do for your car and your homeowner’s insurance. This increases the cost of business, thus the price for customers goes up as well.

In the case of licensing, there are two ways that this increases the cost. First, there are business fees that must be paid to be a properly-licensed painting company. In addition to that, however, there are professional standards that need to be consistently met. In order to meet those standards, a painting company has to invest in their personnel:

  • Special classes for safety and painting skills
  • Regular employee training
  • Sufficient wages to ensure consistent, long-term, skilled employees

Is the Cost of Licensing and Insurance Worth It?

When you hire an unlicensed painting company, you have no guarantee that their work is held to industry best practices, or even that the company is legal. If there is a problem with their work or if they fail to complete a job, you may have little recourse to resolve the problem.

In the case of an uninsured company, you as the homeowner take on all the risks associated with the project. If a worker is injured on your property, you could be financially liable for that situation. In addition, if the project caused any damage to your home, to your property, or to your family, you would not be covered by any company policy.

In contrast, when you hire a licensed, insured painting company, you know you can trust their workmanship and integrity, and you are fully protected in the event of any mishap.

How Do I Know?

How can you tell if a painter has licensing and insurance? Many painting companies will say so on their website. For example, we have our license number listed as part of our contact information at the bottom of each page on our website. Also, as you are interviewing painting companies during your search process, you can ask them to see proof of their licensing and insurance. A reputable painting company will not be offended by this question; they will know you are completing your due diligence.
