Interior Paint Color Tips: Gray without Gloom!

If you follow trending paint colors, you know that gray has dominated the scene for a couple of years straight now. Sure, colors are tipping more toward earthy, warm neutrals for 2022, but overall gray is still a go-to choice.

Its evergreen popularity is really due to the fact that it’s such a pleasant, versatile neutral. Like white, it plays well with lots of other accent colors, furniture, and decor, but it has more character. Plus, there are a lot of options to choose from, whether you prefer a dark charcoal or something lighter and brighter. Subtle tones can shine through too, like purple or blue.

With all the “good” on one side of the scale, is there a downside? Well, for many, gray is a nice choice, but feels a little too gloomy. Maybe it makes you think of overcast skies or rainy days.

Never fear. We have a few tips for you to keep in mind.

5 Ways To Make a Gray Room Feel Cheery

1. Choose your gray carefully

As we mentioned above, you have a lot to pick from. Consider your room’s size and light levels too, as well as your overall goals for the space. Do you want it to feel darker and cozier, or a bit more airy? After you’ve narrowed down a handful of grays, take the time to paint samples on several of your walls. A swatch can be helpful, but it never gives you all the information you need. Plus, it’s important to see how your paint looks in different levels of light throughout the day.

2. Go with an accent wall

If you love the idea of a bold, deeper gray, try it as just an accent wall. This can be a nice, happy medium, introducing the color to your space without having it become too overwhelming.

3. Balance with beadboard, wainscoting, or molding

Gray pairs beautifully with white wainscoting or crown molding, especially if you’re looking for a classy, sophisticated combo. As an extra benefit, it helps to bring balance to the gray as well and reduce that overcast look.

4. Add brighter accents within the room

Need to fill the room with that perfect gray? No problem! Try adding brighter accent pieces to help dispel any gloom. And don’t just choose white, even though it’s super bright. White and gray are a beautiful combo in many ways, but they’re also a cold combo. Add warmer colors like red, yellow, or a bright, trendy green. It’s a nice complement to the gray, but also immediately raises the visual temperature.

5. Go with greige

Greige is a gray base with just a little beige or brown mixed in. It still offers the style you love, but takes the chill off. There are lots of varieties to pick from, so have fun hunting!
