Don’t look past your entryway! The right paint color can set the mood for the rest of your home.
If you were to list the surfaces and spaces that benefit the most from a fresh coat of paint, you’d probably think of your living room, dining room, kitchen, cabinets, and maybe bedrooms. Makes sense! Those are all high-traffic areas that you use and enjoy every day.
Take a minute though and think about your entryway. Maybe you rather wouldn’t! For many, it can become a catch-all, full of jackets, backpacks, and maybe random stuff you’ve been meaning to put into storage. Hey, no judgment. We all do it.
In reality, your entryway can be a HUGE focal point, and the right paint color can unlock all that hidden potential. Here are a few tips and ideas to keep in mind.
First, decide whether you want to go bold or go neutral
This is the first big decision you have to make. Kind of a crossroads where two paths diverge. If you want to have your entryway be clean and inviting, but not necessarily make a statement, the neutral path is probably a good fit. It also can work well if you have other bold colors within your home and you’d rather not worry about clashing.
If you want to leave a lasting first impression, go bolder. The payoff can be huge.
Popular neutral paint colors for entryways
You can’t go wrong with either white or gray. They’re timeless, work beautifully with any and every other color and texture you might want to introduce, and they offer a bright vibe. Keep in mind too that there are endless variations of each. Go warmer, go colder, lighter or darker… You have serious options.
Love the neutral vibe but want something with a little more personality? You may want to consider greige.
Earthy colors like green and blue are also really popular right now, and if you go light enough they really cross over into a near-neutral. It can be a nice alternative to just white or gray.
Pro Tip:
That bright neutral might look amazing, but keep in mind that bumps and scuffs are going to happen a lot in a busy entryway. Consider a color that’s dark enough to be forgiving, or at the very least is easy to touch up down the road.
Popular bold paint colors for an entryway
Take the colors we discussed above, but go darker.
- Bold blue, either for all your walls or as an accent wall with lighter neutrals for the rest
- Green (very popular!). Soft, earthy greens, almost like seafoam, are super trendy right now.
- Dark gray or even black. Just watch your lighting! Dark colors close in a space and make it feel small like nothing else. Balance this style with white trim and doors, and make sure you have access to natural light ideally, or at the very least plenty of overhead lighting.
What do we recommend?
Every space is different. As a general rule, unless you have a very unique entryway with specific characteristics, it’s best to stick with a lighter, brighter palette. It creates the feeling of space, plus adds extra cheer to what should be an inviting part of your home.
