  • Avoiding Paint Failure

There is nothing more disappointing than the wasted time and expense of a paint job that does not last. If you have ever experienced the frustration of painting a surface only to have it crack, bubble, or fade soon after, you were probably left wondering what went wrong. Was it the paint? Was it something you did wrong? Let’s look at some of the more common reasons why paint jobs fail prematurely and learn how create the best conditions for a long lasting finish.

Common Types of Paint Failure

Bubbling - Bubbles under the surface of your paint film are caused by moisture trapped between the paint film and the surface. Trapped moisture occurs when you paint under conditions that are too humid or if the surface is becoming damp due to either a leak or an improperly sealed surface.

Chalking - Have you ever run your hand over a painted surface only to have a chalky residue come away? This powdering occurs most frequently with painted exterior surfaces where light and exposure to the elements breaks down the binder. Painting with high-quality paint specially formulated for exterior use is the best way to postpone chalking on exterior surfaces, though it will happen eventually with even the highest quality paints.

Peeling or Flaking - This type of failure is usually caused by the paint failing to adhere properly to the surface. An improperly prepared surface is usually to blame. All grease and dirt should be removed and the surface must be allowed to dry fully before applying paint.

Creating the Right Conditions for Painting

So how do you ensure that your paint finish will stand the test of time?
