All About Accent Walls: Interior Painting Ideas

Draw the eye and take your interior paint to the next level!

Accent walls have been popular for a long, long time. They’re such a perfect way to ramp up the color in a space, adding some visual interest. You can also use them to experiment with a bolder color that you might not really want throughout the whole room.

Trending paint colors come and go, but the accent wall is timeless. With that said, there are some particularly popular approaches right now that you may want to test out in your home. Ready for a closer look?

Incorporate wood tones in your accent wall

Go ahead and lay down that deeper, bolder color, but don’t stop there. Many homeowners are using trim pieces to overlay geometric shapes and patterns, sometimes painting the wood and sometimes leaving them with a natural finish. Over the painted wall, the results can be really striking!

While we’re talking about light carpentry… After your room is painted, why not try wood as an accent wall? We’re not talking 1980s wood paneling, but a chic statement in any color or finish you like. You could even use vinyl planks for a super durable, easier to install alternative to wood.

Painting an accent half-wall

Same idea as an accent wall, but instead of allocating the paint to just one wall, paint the lower half of a couple walls. We’d recommend using a darker color down low and a lighter color up top, just to make sure the room doesn't feel dark and isn’t shortened. Darker paint up high can close a room in - unless that’s what you’re going for!

Use geometric shapes on your accent wall

Who says an accent wall needs to be a solid color? Carefully planned and taped out geometric shapes can look AMAZING, whether you’re adding a whimsical touch to a kid’s room or creating something super modern and edgy.

Quick tips for picking your accent wall

Keep these points in mind:

  1. Remember that your accent wall is going to draw attention, so carefully choose what elements you’re highlighting. A wide open, symmetrical wall is best.
  2. It’s typically recommended to use the wall you face most often as your accent wall - something to keep in mind the next time you’re considering all the potential within the room.
  3. Make sure there’s nothing obscuring the view. For example, if your accent wall has a window, you don’t want to hide it behind large drapes.
  4. Go bold with your color! It can feel a little scary, but it’s worth it. You want it to grab attention!
