Shower Reglazing, Before and After Photos

In our culture today, far too many things are disposable; why bother fixing it when you can just buy a new one? However, many people are wisely pushing against this trend, seeking to bring new life to items that are showing the signs of age and wear. Bathtub or shower reglazing is a great example of this. Whether you have a cast iron clawfoot tub or a fiberglass acrylic shower, you can make them look like new with expert reglazing.

Not long ago, our craftsmen reglazed a shower for one of our clients here in Connecticut, illustrating the incredible potential of this process. Take a look at the difference!

As you can see, the results are spectacular! The homeowners are thrilled, having a shower that looks new, without the cost and waste of replacing it.

Advantages of Bathtub or Shower Reglazing

Why would you opt for reglazing a shower or bathtub instead of replacing it?

  • Reglazing a shower or tub is far less expensive than replacing it. The cost is less than half, and depending on the exact circumstances, could be as little as 10% to 25% of the cost.
  • Keeping your current tub or shower means that there is no renovation needed to the plumbing and the surrounding surfaces (tile, drywall, etc.).
  • Reusing and updating your fixtures keeps them from ending up in landfills, and reduces the need for the production of new fixtures.

What Is the Process of Tub or Shower Reglazing Like?

There are four basic stages to a tub or shower reglazing project:

  1. Cleaning
  2. Etching
  3. Priming
  4. Coating

The cleaning and etching processes are the most labor intensive. First, the cleaning involves a thorough scraping of every surface to remove all soap residue, hard water deposits, and general grime. If this is not done sufficiently, the whole project will definitely fail. The etching procedure can be done manually by scrubbing with etching powder, though a professional might use an acid etching compound for more even, reliable results.

Applying the primer and topcoat can be done with a brush and roller, which would be the typical do-it-yourself method. Better results are achieved with spray equipment, applying multiple light coats for a superior, longer-lasting finish.

Is Shower Reglazing a Good DIY Project?

Reglazing a shower or bathtub is a bit like repainting a car. Anyone can apply the paint, but what kind of results are you hoping for? To achieve smooth, durable, beautiful, worthwhile results from the project, you need more skill, knowledge, and equipment than a typical do-it-yourselfer has.

Additionally, the do-it-yourself process for shower reglazing is very work-intensive and lengthy. When you hire a professional to reglaze a tub or shower, it spares you a great deal of time, energy, and sore arms!
