My Ceiling Has Water Damage. Can I Paint Over It?

With all the rain we’ve been getting recently in Connecticut, a lot of us have water damage on our drywall, either on the ceilings or walls. Can you paint over these troublesome water stains? Yes, as long as the drywall is not sagging or weakened. There are a few things that need to be done first, however, before you can paint over water damage:

Repair: The area that has the water damage is stained because water got in. Obviously, water will continue to get in until the leak is fixed, and you don’t want water to spoil a new paint job. Have a professional roofer or carpenter find and repair the source of water entry before you bother repainting the area.

Dry: If the area is wet, you need to dry it before you can repaint. This needs to be a deep drying, removing not only the water you can see, but also any water or dampness inside the wall or ceiling. Running a dehumidifier or blowing a fan can help speed up this drying process.

De-mold: If the water-stained drywall is showing any signs of mold or mildew (which is more likely if it was a long-term leak), the mold must be eliminated. You will probably do best to hire a professional contractor for this, since most sprays used as mold/mildew killer are toxic. If the mold is bad enough you might even need to replace a section of your wall or ceiling, because you don’t want that mold becoming a permanent resident!

Prime:  The next step is to prime the wall or ceiling using a stain-blocking primer. If you skip this important step, you will continue to see water stains through the paint.

Paint: Finally, you can paint! Now that you have repaired the leak, dried the drywall, killed the mold, and primed stains, you are ready to paint. You will probably need to paint the whole area around the stain (the whole wall or ceiling) because it is very difficult to make the paint blend in if you try to just patch it.

Hiring a Professional

If this is sounding like a lot of work, don’t worry. If you hire a professional painting contractor for the job, you can be assured that the whole project will be completed correctly, and with much less hassle on your part! They can help make sure the leak is properly repaired, get rid of any mold safely and effectively, prime the stained area, and do what they do best: paint the area carefully with high-quality paint, leaving you with no mess, no stress, and a better looking wall or ceiling than you had before.
